Abstract:
This article examines notes made by Viacheslav Ivanov, apparently in the fall of 1919, while reading Shklovskii’s essay “Art as Technique.” There is no doubt that this publication, although not close to Viacheslav Ivanov in its underlying premises, attracted him to the collection “Poetics” (1919), which became one of the most striking manifestos of Russian formalism. The two paragraphs devoted to Shklovskii’s article “Art as Technique” in Vyach. Ivanov’s review “On the Latest Theoretical Inquiries in the Field of the Poetic Word” analyze primarily the problem of the automatization of perception and the opposing technique of defamiliarization. However, as Ivanov’s notes show, he was interested in a much wider range of issues discussed in this article: a critique of Potebnia’s understanding of the imagery of art, the immutability of images, the distinctiveness of artistic perception, “vision” as a device and the making of things” in art, the dichotomy between prose and poetic speech, the complexity of poetic language, its colloquialisms, Slavicisms, and archaisms, the disruption of poetic rhythm as a deliberate artistic device, etc. Shklovskii’s article, written from a perspective unusual for a poet, addressed a number of issues that had long preoccupied Viach. Ivanov, thereby giving new impetus to his thinking. The poeta doctus returned to this same set of questions a few years later in lectures on “Poetics” that he delivered at Baku University in the spring of 1922 (the course was repeated twice – in the spring of 1923 and during the 1923–24 academic year).
