Abstract: 

In the contemporary history of Russian philosophy, the problem of authenticity – the “Russianness” of the Russian philosophical tradition–remains relevant. Scholarship to date has been dominated by an approach according to which the Russian intelligentsia of the 19th and early 20th centuries drew inspiration primarily from the European philosophical tradition. However, the interaction between European rationalism and the Russian national tradition was not one-sided but dialectical in character – a fact insufficiently accounted for in existing research. Based on V.N. Muravyov's work “The Roar of the Tribe” (1918), this article examines the historiosophical problems of Russian thought concerning the fate of Russia. Employing phenomenological, hermeneutic, and dialectical methods, the study identifies the semantic structures of the text and traces the dialectical synthesis of European and Russian philosophical traditions. The research reveals that in addressing the problem of the intelligentsia–people divide – that is, the split between abstract rationalism and the active-integral worldview – Muravyov draws on a number of philosophical ideas present in the legacy of N.F. Fedorov. The article argues that “The Roar of the Tribe” constitutes a unique synthesis of Russian Orthodox culture and religious-philosophical thought, in which tendencies toward Muravyov's subsequent reception of N.F. Fedorov's philosophy of the regulation of nature in the 1920s are already evident. The author concludes that Muravyov deliberately draws on the national tradition in order to resolve the historiosophical problem of the disunity between the intelligentsia and the people–a disunity that led to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 – and to create an image of Russia's future in which the problem of the intelligentsia-people divide will be resolved and, thereby, Russian national identity preserved.
