Abstract:
The article is written on the basis of a vast epistolary complex: 110 letters from the diplomat, historian and genealogist Konstantin Gubastov (1845–1919) to his close friend, the writer and philosopher, who at the time of the beginning of their communication was also a diplomat – Konstantin Leontiev (1831–1891). This correspondence has great historical value, but is also interesting in a historical-literary sense, since it discusses not only the works of Leontiev (his novels and articles), but also the works of I.S. Turgenev (the novel “Virgin soil”) and L.N. Tolstoy (“The Kreutzer Sonata” and philosophical treatises). Turning to such topics, Gubastov touches upon the issue of the reception of Russian literature in the West, refers to his conversation with Viennese booksellers and notes the emergence of new translations. The author of the letters supports his own judgments with the thoughts of French critics (E. Shuré, P. Janet and others) about contemporary trends in literature and philosophy, and the parallels that he was able to discover provide an interesting insight into the work of Russian writers. Nowadays, Gubastov is little known, and this required devoting a significant part of the article to an exposition of his biography, traced against the background of the history of his friendship with Leontiev.
