Abstract:

The concept of Christian unity in Russian religious philosophy is predominantly associated with Vladimir Solovyov, while the intellectual legacy of his nephew and follower, Sergey Solovyov, remains significantly under-researched. This study addresses this gap by examining the development of Philo-Catholic and ecumenical ideas in early 20th-century Russia, exploring the unique spiritual trajectory of a thinker whose formation occurred during a period of profound historical catastrophe. The research is based on a comprehensive analysis of a wide range of sources, including Sergey Solovyov's philosophical, theological, and literary-critical works, his poetic oeuvre, correspondence, and previously unstudied archival materials (from the holdings of the Russian State Library, the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, the Central Archive of the FSB, and the ACCO). The methodology combines historical-philosophical reconstruction with comparative and biographical analysis to trace the evolution of the thinker's views against the backdrop of his life-creation and socio-political upheavals. The article reconstructs the intellectual biography of Solovyov and identifies the key stages in the evolution of his idea of Christian unity – from the aesthetic search for a cultural synthesis in his Symbolist poetry, through his Orthodox priesthood, to his final conversion to Eastern Rite Catholicism. It analyzes his polemics with representatives of the “New Religious Consciousness” and his critique of Slavophilism. The study argues that Solovyov's approach was fundamentally pragmatic, historical, and ecclesiological, interpreting Catholicism as both a spiritual and a political foundation for the salvation of post-revolutionary Russia. His later works are examined to reveal his core thesis on the necessity of a union with Rome as a prerequisite for the revival of the Orthodox East. The study concludes that Sergey Solovyov's idea of Christian unity, after a complex evolution, crystallized into a concrete ecclesiastical and practical program. This program synthesized an ecumenical ideal for Russia's renewal and a tragic awareness of the crisis of all historical forms of Christianity, representing a unique reinterpretation of the “Russian Idea” through the lens of a Catholic eschatology.
