Abstract:
The article provides a historiographical overview of the research literature devoted to the debate between Solovyov and Kareev on issues in the philosophy of history, unfolded in the early 1890s. It presents an analysis of the positions of Vladimir Solovyov and N.I. Kareev regarding the understanding of the role and significance of metaphysics in constructing concept of philosophy of history and the correlation of subject and object in cognition. The validity of Solovyov’s viewpoint is noted, interpreting history as a divine-human process, the comprehension of which is impossible without recourse to historiosophical metaphysics aimed at interpreting the inner meaning of the historical process. The rootedness of Solovyov’s position in his concept of total-unity is emphasized. It is observed that Kareev’s anti-metaphysical stance is a consequence of his commitment to positivism. The importance of the debate between these two eminent thinkers for the development of Russian philosophical-historical thought at the end of the 19th century is emphasized.
