Abstract:

The personality and works of M.P. Pogodin are revealed through the prism of perception by his contemporaries – S.M. and Vl.S. Solovyov. The choice of these names is directly related to the article’s epigraph, where the key words are “debates” (disagreements) and “impartiality”. Revealing the contours and meanings of Solovyov's “trace” allows us to see impartially not only of M.P. Pogodin himself, but also significant trends in Russian historiosophy. General description of what M.P. Pogodin did during his life and determined the scale of his personality is given. The author of the article presents key episodes in the biographies of M.P. Pogodin and S.M. Solovyov, which allow us to see the reasons for the gradually increasing discrepancies, which eventually gain historiosophical content. The article defines main meanings of these discrepancies, their consequences, among which one of the most significant is Pogodin’s “Norman” theory and its criticism by contemporaries, focused in the works by S.M. Solovyov. This issue is considered taking into account the degree of its research through a system of references to relevant scientific works. A special attention is paid to the issues of the state of faith in Russia in the time of M.P. Pogodin and S.M. Solovyov, their attitude to this state, their own religiosity and its influence on their work. Through religious problematic, Vl.S. Solovyov’s attitude to Pogodin is revealed, his assessments are given, which are exclusively positive. It is noted that it was Vl.S. Solovyov who first noticed the specific aspects of Pogodin’s book “Simple Speech on Wise Things”, which can be figuratively defined as a premonition by Vasily Rozanov’s “foliage”. Special emphasis is given on large families of Pogodin and S.M. Solovyov, their relationships with wives and children. As a result, the works of M.P. Pogodin and S.M. Solovyov are considered in a unified space of Russian culture as its different shades.
