Abstract: 

The article proposes a new approach to the interpretation of Vladimir Solovyov's article “Impressionism of thought”, devoted to the work of the pre-symbolist poet Konstantin Sluchevsky (1837–1904). It is shown that the very concept of “impressionism of thought” introduced by the philosopher in this literary-critical text in order to characterize the poetry of Sluchevsky has not yet been finally clarified. It is argued that in order to reveal the original meaning that Solovyov put into this formulation, it is necessary to take into account the biographical factor, as it helps to clarify both the development of Solovyov's attitude to Sluchevsky as a poet, and the thinker's attitude to “impressionism” as a cultural phenomenon. In this connection, the question of the philosopher's personal contact with famous artists of his time is raised from the point of view of their possible influence on Solovyov's aesthetics, namely on his views on painting. It is shown that for a clearer understanding of the formula “Impressionism of thought” it is necessary to consider this literary-critical article by Solovyov in the context his general aesthetic conception on the basis of which Solovyov expressed his judgments about the lyrical texts of the poets of the 19th century, and the purely philosophical context against the background of which the article, published in 1897, was written. That is, first of all, against the background of Solovyov's gnoseology, expressed in his unfinished treatise “Theoretical philosophy” (1897–1899).
