“...And as a lawyer robbed an old lady”: Commentary on the epigram by Vl.S. Solovyov on K.P. Pobedonostsev

Abstract:

The author of the article uses handwritten sources to restore the correct reading of the final line from Vl. Solovyov’s epigram on K.P. Pobedonostsev (“You have become famous in various fields...”), clarifies the time of its creation (Christmas time 1891/1892) and for the first time gives a detailed, scientifically based commentary on this work and on the epigram that appeared simultaneously with it, written in collaboration with Prince S.N. Trubetskoy. The article corrects numerous errors in previous comments and, based on archival documents, reconstructs the historical episode that gave rise to the appearance of two witty epigrams. The material for the historical excursion was discovered in the archives of S.A. Rachinsky (Russian National Library). The appendix to the article contains a letter to Rachinsky from A.N. Bakhmeteva, a writer who suffered from Pobedonostsev’s plagiarism, i.e., the very “theft” that Soloviov ridiculed. Letters from others are quoted extensively in the text.
